I’m excited about…

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:52 pm by Kelsey

I’m excited about…

1) Going to bed in about an hour. The only thing that’s preventing me from going to bed now is that I need to study a little more for my Calc III test that I have in the morning. (So what better way to study than to write a post right?)

2) Tomorrow in general. Tomorrow at noon marks the unofficial start of my spring break. Friday at 3pm is the offical start, but my last test of the week is over at noon tomorrow. So once I’m finished with that, I’ll have no more tests, no more lab reports, no more homework, done! Oh, and tomorrow is Survivor night!

3) This weekend. I get hang out with my family and Christopher and spend some time in the wonderful land I like to call HOME! Grand Forks = homework and classes. Home = relaxation and fun.

4) Next Wednesday thru Sunday. For the latter half of my spring break, I will be traveling down to Oklahoma with a few other meteorology girls and one of our professors. We’re going down there for a National Severe Weather Conference. Yes, I realize I’m a nerd. I embrace it with open arms.

5) Easter. I get to drink pop!!!! (I’ve been going thru withdrawls and might start attending CA meetings… Caffiene-aholics Anonymous.) Of the things I gave up for lent… that’s been the hardest by far. Oh, and of course, Easter = Jesus!

6) Warmth! It’s supposed to get warmer throughout the spring months (or so they tell me in meteorology classes, but sometimes I’m not so sure.)

Winter Wonderland…. or not.

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:51 pm by Kelsey

40 mile an hour winds and -40 wind chills? Who wouldn’t love Grand Forks right now? (ME!) I’m just ready for it to be nice out. Nice enough so I don’t have to wear a coat when I walk to class. Nice enough so I didn’t have to warm my car up and scrape it off everytime I needed to go somewhere. Nice enough so when I look outside I see something else besides white. Oh well…

This morning I woke up and Kelly, Steph, and I watched Legends of the Fall. It was a good movie, if you like movies where EVERYONE dies. Then we watched Grease 2, to lighten the mood after all of the killing in the first movie.  Later in the day we watched Labrinth, which is WEIRD.  There are no other words.

The past week went by pretty fast. No tests, which is always good. And as far as homework, the usual. Last week, I had three tests. My Wednesday one was in my instrumentation class for meteorology and it went good. But I had a Calc III test and Physics II test back to back on Friday. Needless to say I was pretty much drained after that. Last weekend was pretty full. Friday and Saturday nights I watched the Sioux vs Gopher game. I was surrounded by Gopher fans and that sucked. You’re all just jealous. Saturday, Christopher and I (and my brother) went to Unity Square and ate at Taco Johns. Then we went to the Ortonville basketball games and after that, went to Christopher’s church to eat pancakes! It was very yummy. I’m very excited for this coming weekend! Not only is it a three day weekend, but Christopher is coming up to Grand Forks. Hopefully it’s nicer next weekend than it is right now.

Oh, and just for the record, I have 52 days of class left til finals.

Mankato Madness!

Posted in Uncategorized at 10:54 pm by Kelsey

Last Friday, I was walking along the sidewalk on the wonderful campus at UND. All of a sudden, I jumped into a car with two random girls and as we were driving I was very excited. They drove me to a small town just outside of Mankato, called Madison Lake, where the one named Leah said, “We’ve reached our destination. My home.” During the 6 hour trip, they made me talk about meteorology and made me listen to the Sioux hockey game (which I didn’t mind all that much, especially when the Sioux won!) The girl named Erin willing told us everything about each of the players on the team. That night, we all slept in one queen sized bed and they stuck me in the middle, because I “sleep like a board,” said Leah.

Okay, so I must confess (if you havn’t already realized) that the two random girls are two of my best friends at school (who are meteorology majors with me) and that I wasn’t, in fact, opposed to any of the things we did. We had decided to take a trip down to Mankato to watch the hockey games since Leah lives there. But let me continue my story:

Saturday we got up late, then decided to go sledding. We thought it might be too cold, but the wind chill was only -22 so we decided to go for it. It was a blast. It was the best hill I’ve ever gone sledding down. We trecked back to Leah’s house and we each bathed ourselves. Once we were presentable to go out in public, we drove into Mankato, where we ate at Noodles. I had the infamous Wisconson Macaroni and Cheese. It… was… amazing. Then we were off for the highlight of our weekend: the hockey game!!! It was the Mankato Mavericks vs the North Dakota Fighting Sioux. Of course, UND won. It was a TON of fun. (That’s quite a load of fun… I’m not sure I could handle all that.)

Sunday we did homework ALL DAY. Yes, our weekend of fun and excitement was dragged down by a large physics assingment and a programming assignment. The physics sucked, like always, which is why I’ve renamed it “phy-sucks.” It just hasn’t quite caught on yet, but give it time. Soon, students will be taking Physucks 252 instead plain Phyiscs 252. It will be true to its name. Even though the physics sucked, the programming was fun, as usual. (I love programming!) Erin, Leah, and I just got virtual linux machines on our laptops, so we were having fun playing with those and writing our program. It was our first programming assignment of the semester and it was pretty in depth. We had it finished and it compiled and ran and everything seemed to be working, except our numbers were off a little. (Just a note to everyone out there… when using sine and cosine in the C language, be sure to convert your numbers from degrees to radians first.) Once that little bug was found, we finished. We were rewarded for doing our homework by a huge yummy meal prepared by Leah’s mother and father. Her dad made smoked turkey (which was amazing) and her mom made applesauce bars, oriental cole slaw, and lots of other yummy things!

Monday morning we slept in again, showered, ate lunch, packed, and hopped on the road back to good old Grand Forks. It was a splendid weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I posted an album on facebook of the weekend if you care to take a peek.

First day of the semester and I’m already procrastinating. But what a better way to procrastinate than by writing a post, right? Well, in case you didn’t know, I began classes again today. YUCK. To say the least, the last couple days before I left were quite depressing. I did NOT want to come back to school. Seems like I dread classes more and more each semester. I’m only taking 4 classes and 2 labs, plus band. I’m in Calc 3, Physics 2 plus lab, Meteorological Instrumentation plus lab, and a meteorology programming class. After having only two classes today, I already have problems that are due thursday in calculus and friday in physics. Calculus shouldn’t be too bad of a class, I tend to do well in calc classes. They’re kinda fun. Physics, on the other hand, might be a stresser. We’re using an online website WileyPLUS to do half of our assignments on and it’s already been giving me problems. Oh well. Tomorrow, I have my instrumentation class (the professor is my advisor and i’ve had him a couple times before, and he’s a fun teacher). That class should be pretty fun. We get to make thermometers and barometers in the lab! I also have my programming class tomorrow. I’m not too worried about that class, but it will be a lot of outside work.

Anyway… enough about classes, it’s depressing thinking about classes. I’m really exctied for summer!!! My break was good, but very short. Every one else at home doesn’t start class for another week or even two weeks. I’m jealous. I didn’t do anything too terribly exciting over break. Christopher and I went to Andes Tower Hills last week. It was awesome! I rented ski blades instead of regular skis. They’re about half as long and a bit wider. They were so much fun!!! I had a blast!

That’s about all I have for now. I’m going to go wallow in self pity while I read Chapter 21 in physics. The chapter is titled, “Electric Charge.” Very exciting, I know. I’m going to try really hard to not get distracted by wanting to paint my toe nails (which really needs to be done.)

Winter break… here I come!!!

Posted in Uncategorized at 12:43 pm by Kelsey

Only an hour ’til I can go eat lunch. Only 6 1/2 hours left of being in Grand Forks.  Only a matter of hours (or days) ’til I get to see Christopher and everyone else.  Only 11 days ’til Christmas.  Only 25 days ’til the Spring semester starts (yuck).  Only 5 months left ’til summer vacation!

I’m going to stop while I’m ahead.  But when you think of it this way, summer vacation is just around the corner.  Well, today is Friday and I’m going home for winter break today.  I’m very excited.  My last final was Tuesday and I’ve been working since then.  Working 8 hour days kills me.  How am I ever gunna make it in the real world?!  Solution: I’ll just stay in college forever.  I’ll never have to work a full day and I’ll never have to pay back my student loans.  Great idea right?  NOT.  I would NEVER wanna spend my entire life in college.  Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy it and all, but the whole homework thing and walking to class in -60 windchills isn’t exactly my favorite thing to do.

Let me give you a brief “end-of-the-semester” summary:  I finished out good in all of my classes.  Physics is the one class I’m really nervous about.  The final was impossible, but I’m hoping I can squeek by with an A.  Last week, I had to have people help push my car out TWICE.  I also locked my keys in my car while it was running.  It cost me $40 to have the locksmith come and unlock it, ‘cuz Campus Police doesn’t help the students anymore.  Stupid.  Oh well… it’s a mistake I’ll never make again.  (Hopefully.)  Next semester I’m taking on a second job.  In addition to the job I already have (which I love), I’m going to be helping one of the meteorology professors do some programming and organizing his research data.  It should be a good hands-on experience with computers and meteorology.  I’m only taking four classes, two labs, and band next semester.

Well, as soon as I’m done with work today, I’m heading back to Ortonville and I’ll be home ’til January 7th!  (I’m very excited!)

Let It Snow!

Posted in Uncategorized at 4:16 pm by Kelsey

So I havn’t written a post in a while, so I thought I’d do that. I’m supposed to be rehearsing with my acting scene partner right now. We were supposed to meet about 45 mins ago but she didn’t show up. I have terrible luck working in groups and getting them to show up to meetings and stuff. UGH. Anyway… I only have 4 days of class left. I’m super excited. Then after that, I have three finals and then I’m DONE! (Well, til January…) I have two finals on Monday the 10th and one final on the 11th. I’m going to work the rest of the week before I come home though.  All of my classes are going really good, except for Physics. That’s the hardest class I’m in by far, so I’m really nervous about that final. My Calc II final shouldn’t be too hard. I like that class, I’ve discoverd that I really like math this semester. I’m a nerd, I know. Haha. And my last final isn’t comprehensive and it’s in Meteorology so it shouldn’t be too bad. I registerd for classes a couple weeks ago and I’m taking only 16 credits next semester. I’m taking a meteorology computer programming class, a meteorology instrumentation class with lab, Calc III, Physics II with lab, and Band. I’m also going to be working another job hopefully. It would be helping one of the meterology professors organize his research and do some programming for him. It would be fun, I love programming, plus its in meteorology, so I’d get some hands on experience with it.

I’m so very happy that we got some snow. Last weekend, we got a couple inches up here. It caught everyone off guard and I wasn’t happy about it. It seemed to early for it to snow. But then we got dumped on yesterday and it’s finally December and with only 4 days of classes left, I guess I’m happy it snowed. I want to go play in it… but its not very good snowman making snow. It’s really fluffy. When I went to leave for church this morning, I had to get all of the snow off my car first. I had a huge drift on the driver’s side that I had to step in, plus there was a big drift on the top of my car. It wasn’t icy at all so it brushed off easily, but there was a spot in the center of the top of my car that I couldn’t reach, so driving down the road I’m sure it looked goofy. My car was completely clean except for that one spot that still had like 6 inches of snow on it. Oh well.

On Friday, I spent the night by myself in my apartment. All of my roommates and friends were busy either working, being with their boyfriend, or at home. So I watched the Food Network then Tyra (I love Tyra) and painted three paintings. I called my mommy and Christopher a couple times too when I got bored. But it was some nice alone time. Yesterday, I was going to meet my parents in Fargo, but the weather didn’t really cooperate. So yesterady afternoon, Steph, Kelly, and I ventured to the mall and to Walmart and Gordman’s in the blizzard. It probably wasn’t very smart, but we had a productive afternoon. When we got back, I made almond bark covered oreos. They are amazing. Mmmm…. Now I’m watching the Vikings do awesome! I’m procrastinating doing homework. Maybe I’ll paint again today. I’ve really been enjoying that lately. I bought some new colors and a couple new brushes and a few canvas boards on Friday.

Well, I hope to see everyone over Christmas break!!! Enjoy the snow and stay warm!!!

I love long weekends!

Posted in Uncategorized at 2:02 pm by Kelsey

So many colleges didn’t have class on Monday because of Veteran’s Day.  I was happy. I’m always excited when there’s no class.  Also… our UND football team was playing their last game of the season down at Vermillion against USD.  Since I’ve never been down to Vermillion, I thought it would be a good opportunity to go to the game and visit Amy (& Dustin).   So I drove to Marshall and Chris and I made the treck down to Vermillion.

The football game was awesome.  Since we were going to be sitting in the USD student section, I didn’t want to wear green because I’d stick out terribly.  However, after seeing a few other ppl in green, I really wish I would have worn green.  Oh well… it was a very close game and exciting to watch, but in the end, UND won!  That evening, Amy made spaghetti.  It was very yummy and was way better than eating out.  Later we went to one of her friends where I played Guitar Hero III for the first time.  (I think I like Guitar Hero II better… I recognize more of the songs in the second one.)  But I totally played a couple of songs on Hard, which I’ve never really done before, and I didn’t do that bad!  We ended the night by getting ice cream at TCBY.

Sunday we went to Cherry Street Grille for lunch.  I recommend it to anyone and everyone!  It’s this amazing restaurant/cafe, that has all kinds of yummy food. They also have 101 different kind of omlettes ranging from normal everyday ones, taco and pizza kinds, pickle, an omlette without eggs, peanut butter and jelly, chicken and ranch, chocoloate sundae, resee’s peanut butter cup (Kelly, that one’s for you!), and many many others.  After that Amy showed us around the great city of Vermillion.  She even drove us to the Missouri River so I could go to Nebraska!  (I’ve never been to Nebraska before, so I can now check that off my states list.)  Later that afternoon Chris and I drove back to Marshall and went to church at the religious center on campus.  We didn’t think it’d be too busy, since it was a Sunday evening and it was an on campus mass… but it was packed.  We ended up sitting in the front row!  It wasn’t bad though.  Half way through one of the readings this little girl beside us fell asleep and almost fell to the ground.  I felt bad for her, but it was kind of funny when her mom had to grab her.

Monday before I drove back to Grand Forks, my mom made me get a flu shot.  I hate shots.  But at least I won’t get the flu!  The drive back was long and dull, as usual.  When I’m alone it seems to take FOREVER, but when someone is riding with me (like Kelly), it goes my much faster.  I had to make sure I was back around 8ish, because I had a meeting with my physics lab group at 8:30.  I went to my meeting and sat there, wondering “why is everyone so late?”  I began working on my lab report without them.  I worked on it for over an hour by myself.  NONE of my group members showed up.  I was quite unhappy with them… at the least.  Oh well… my lab is finished and handed in and my group members are begging for forgiveness. (Not really, but at least one of them apologized.)

I’m heading home this weekend for the OHS fall plays.  It should be a fabulous time.  I also get extra credit for my acting class if I do a critique on it.  I think Chris and I are going to continue our Harry Potter marathon.  We’re up to the third movie.  If we get ambitious, maybe we’ll watch the fourth one too.

Halloween Excitement!

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:53 pm by Kelsey

I want to start off by saying Happy Post-Halloween to everyone. I hope you all dressed up as something scary, funny, or unique. Actually, I hope you all dressed up period. I think everyone should be able to enjoy halloween, not only 8 year olds. Anyway…I went as a Disco Queen. It was the same thing I wore my senior year of high school, so some of you may have seen it before. It was a hideous bright green printed thing that was truly authentic. Oh and I totally painted the boots myself… four layers of white fabric paint later and you get some pretty ‘groovy’ disco boots! Oh, and true story about the costume. It used to be full length, but my mom cut it off and hemmed it. It was my aunts dress from years ago. She actually wore it as a bridesmaids dress. Can you imagine having something that bright and crazy at a wedding!? It’s nuts.

My Disco Queen costume!

For AMS (American Meteorological Society) we always go trick-or-treating to some of the meteorology professor’s houses. We were able to hit up 6 of them this year. We got some candy, some home made apple cider, and some “blood” cupcakes! Oh, and we also got some Chinese candy and treats at one of the Chinese prof’s houses. It was…. interesting. After we finished trick-or-treating, me and Leah (one of my bestest friends and also a meteorology major with me) went to watch a Star Wars fight. Lightsabers and all. It was pretty sweet. Kelly (my roommate and another one of my bestest friends) and Joe (a friend of ours) each dressed up as Star Wars characters. Kelly was a Jedi with a blue lightsaber and Joe was a Sith with a red one. The duel was awesome and I think it ended in a tie, but we all know Kelly should have truly won.

Anyway… along with Halloween comes the never ending marathons of bad horror movies. Steph (another roommate and another bestest friend of mine) was glued to the TV for the last week watching every horror movie, new and old. Once we see Halloween 5 come on, you know its been over done. Why do they insist on making more of those movies when they’re all so… so… lame? Oh, and Dracula 2000? What in the world?! I did decide one thing after suffering through about 7 minutes of it… I think it would be kind of sweet to be a vampire. I mean, I’d get all of those sweet fighting skills, I’d be able to levitate, I could jump over 10 feet high, and I’d never have to sleep! How awesome would that be?! Only, I’m not really into biting people. It’s not really my thing. Kinda creepy and disgusting if you ask me.

I can’t write a blog about Halloween if I don’t include our pumpkin carvings. Me, Kelly, and Leah carved them last Sunday. However, I had to throw them out today because they were getting really moldy and gross. They didn’t last very long… two days after we carved them they looked like death. Which, I guess could be a good thing since it was Halloween and all, but they looked terrible, all dried out and smushed.

Kelly’s, Leah’s, and Mine

I hope everyone had lots of fun on Halloween! I hope you’re all finally coming down from the sugar highs you were on from all the candy that you get at Halloween. And, I wish you all a happy November!

Rain, Rain, Go Away.

Posted in Uncategorized at 2:57 pm by Kelsey

I’m sitting in my apartment right now.  Steph has already left for the weekend, Tessa is in her room, and Kelly is sitting nearby playing Hearts on her computer.  We’re all pretty bored and bummed, because it’s been raining all day.  I have to go to band shortly and I’m dreading walking outside again.  I hate the rain.  (Not as much as I had -40 degree windchills though.)  Oh, if you havn’t heard, which you probably havn’t, they found human remains on campus.  A construction crew was digging by a pipe or something and they found human bones.  They roped off the area and are investigating it further to try and date them.  It’s kind of interesting.  This weekend, I’m going down to the NDSU vs UM football game on Saturday.  I’m excited!  I’m also excited for the concert we’re going to on Saturday.  I’ve never really been to a live concert.  It should be a good time!

If you read my last post, you’ll know that Christopher came to visit me up at school last weekend. It was his first time ever to Grand Forks. I was really glad he finally decided to come visit. Especially since he’s said, multiple times, that he was never coming all the way up here to visit me at school.  Anyway, we went to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings on Friday night ‘cuz Chris has never been there.  On Saturday we went to the football game, which was disapointing.  UND lost their first football game to a team who was also undefeated.  It was fun having Chris at the game, though, because he explained a lot about the penalties and details of the game.  Later that evening we went to the amazing FIGHTING SIOUX hockey game at the Ralph.  It was pretty sweet.  Sioux won 6-0 so it was a good game for him to go to.  On Sunday we went to church and then he left.  I can’t speak for him, but I think he had a great time visiting the outstanding college of UND.

Watching THE OFFICE…bored.

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:43 pm by Kelsey

I’m sitting here watching The Office, and thought I should write another blog. I’m a huge fan of multi-tasking. I can’t just sit and watch TV, I get antsy. Anyway, my life… what about it? Let me brief you. I live on the beautiful University of North Dakota campus. I live in these brand new apartments they just built; they’re really nice. I’m living with my roommate from last year, Tessa, who is the nicest, sweetest person you’ll ever meet! Also, Stephanie, who I worked with at the pool on campus last year. She’s an opinion columnist in our campus newspaper, The Dakota Student. She’s awesome at it. And of course, my very own roommate, whom I share my room with, is Kelly. She’s the oldest of us three, but it’s okay. She just turned 21 about a month ago, so she’s old, but she’s a kid at heart. Anyway, if it weren’t for my roommates, I’d probably go nuts. I usually have a lot of homework and studying to do, so I don’t have much of a life besides that. I had a Chemistry test on Monday and it went TERRIBLE. I got the worst score I’ve ever gotten on a test. But then I had a Calculus II test today and it was AWESOME. I got a 100 on the first Calc II test, so that would be amazing if I got another 100. I don’t know if I got it though, it wasn’t as easy as the first one. But anyway, I also have a Physics test next Tuesday, which I should start studying for now because Christopher is coming up to visit UND this weekend and I don’t wanna spend all weekend studying. (By the way, I’m very excited for him to come, because he’s never been to Grand Forks!) For my Acting class, as our midterm, we have to perform self-written monologues. I’m still working on memorizing mine, but I hope it goes okay. The class is really easy, I mean, it’s Acting, haha. It’s a nice break from all my other hard classes though. Oh and in my Chemistry lab, we did an experiment where we started with some copper pieces, then added some acid, then added some other thing, then heated it, and by the end, we had copper again! It was really cool. At one point, we had a pretty blue liquid. In my Meteorology lab, we’ve been drawing contours, which are basically lines on a map. But we get to use colored pencils and markers in my lab, which is really fun! Oh, we can’t forget about my Physics lab… that sucks. It’s hard and I don’t really understand anything. Plus, my TA is kind of a jerk. Oh, today, I recorded myself doing the weather! Like a real weather person on TV! It went pretty good, considering it was the first time I’d done it for real. But, I sounded like a peppy cheerleader. I need to work on that, haha. Well, that’s all for now. Pretty much a lot of nonesense, but oh well. Sorry if you got bored… Hey! One more thing. I won $25 in the church raffle and my mom mailed it to me. So I’m $25 richer, which is a lot to a college student!
