Sad New 2

MilesRausch.com tearfully brings you this news.

Fr. Wilfrid has died of a massive heart attack this past Thursday night.

I feel fortunate that I was able to converse with Fr. Wilfrid when he showed up at the Freshmen Showcase for the Wednesday performance, even if I wasn’t able to make it to the retreat.

Fr. Wilfrid was the priest at St. Charles Parish in Big Stone City, SD, taking over for the late Fr. Ray Otto. He was a familiar face around the Big Stone, Milbank, and Blue Cloud areas. He was also a great guy and friend. We will miss him.

Well, the play is over. Actually, the play is 2 weeks cold. I think it went well. I got some nice feedback from people who watched it, so it would appear that all the stress I put myself through was worth it. Plus, I got to keep my vase.

I gave my camera to Tony Rolfes, and I trusted him with the documentation of my play. The results are documented in this wonderful album. I think that the last pictures, taken after the play, were actually Bryce’s work. Oh, well. No one has pictures of Jesus, and people still talk about him.

This past week was all about (unsuccessfully) getting my life put back together. My disheth over-floweth and still do. And my fridge is quite a bit empty. My mom always asks what she can bring me up, but I never know what I want for food until I start thinking about supper. And, by then, it’s too, too late. Speaking of which, I should put chicken out for supper tonight.

Tarradiddle Tales did their major run this weekend, as well. I saw the show three times. First alone, taking pictures, second with Bob, making fun, and third with Holli and David, just riding the ride. I have some problems with the script. It was written in the 70’s as a rehashing of folk tales from different countries (“maintaining the language where possible”) and then over-acted to make it entertaining. Yes, I have no life, but I did get entertained.

I’ve been watching The Office (British version) and while I don’t like it as much as The Office (US), it has given me a certain respect for Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. So, I checked out their new show, Extras, that was on BBC-2 and HBO in July and August. I like it better than The Office (British), I think.

If you haven’t, check out Snow Patrol – Final Straw. It’s a really good album, and I’ve had it on my computer for ages, but I’ve never listened to it. Until now. And I’ve fallen in love with it. West Wing did their “Live Debate” episode on Sunday. I appreciate what they tried to do, but I was about as bored as I am when I watch a real debate. I’ve only just seen the West Coast version, and we’ll see how much different the East Coast version is.

Drama Club meeting tonight. w00t.

I will post soon. I just wanted to write this quick.

Remember:

For so many of you as God hath forgotten, twice that many hath he apologized to, most profusely, saying, “Did I not, indeed, remember you first to forget? Have not the midwives oft forgotten a towel soaked in water or a loaf of bread? As they remember and, parting, say, ‘Be right back’ so doth the Lord say unto thee.”

The Death of King Tut

The Death of King Tut
The Death of King Tut, originally uploaded by m!les.

Ooooh, the big fight at the end! Queen Ank (Marci) finally confronts Prime Minister Ay (Andrew) while King Tut (David) enjoys his diced fig.

The Freshman Showcase is:

Wednesday October 26th

and Friday October 28

at 7:30 pm

in the Underground.

The reason we are doing it on Wed & Fri. is that the girl scouts are in there on Thursday night.

The cost is one canned good.

There are 4 plays:

“The Asshole Murder Case” directed by Paul Hotchkiss,

“Bus Stop” written and directed by Holly Smith,

“The Death of King Tut”,

and a Seinfeld episode about masturbation transcribed, edited and directed by Ryan Glanzer.

“The Death of King Tut” will show October 26th and 28th in the Trojan Center Underground. The cost is one canned good. Check on our progress.

How is it that Rory and Logan have been dating a year, and tonight is the first time she’s ever said, “I love you”? Of course, he does the romantic thing and tells her that “I’ve told a lot of girls that I love them and not meant it. I don’t want to do that to you.” Pause. “Boy, that came out wrong.”

Then they make out. I missed half of tonight’s episode, so I’m kinda lost, but it looks like next week (*fingers crossed*) Lorelei and Rory reconnect.

I saw 12 oz. Mouse on [adult swim] on Sunday. Two parts made me laugh.

“No talk. Pay.”
“How much in the world is it?”
“Get in.”
and
“… then you threw up on a girl…”
“What?”

I guess you had to be there. We’ll have to see if they make more episodes or not.

I’ve been more musical lately. Writing music. I made of list of songs I would play if I ever had an album or a concert. Problem is, most of the songs (that are mine) are unfinished or just feel unfinished. But, I guess you have to pick a point and say, “This song is done” or you can never write better songs.

The Office is on. It’s the Halloween episode. Dwight K. Schrute dressed up as a Sith Lord. B. J. Novak had this to say about the episode. Someone finally gets fired. And it’s nasty. But funny. This episode was a little more sentimental than the past ones have been.

Sentimental is not quite what I wanted.

Stir fry chicken (with baby corn, broccoli, mushrooms, and cellophane noodles), pork and shrimp egg rolls, sweet and sour sauce and milk.

Another weekend in the bag, as they say in the biz.

This, ladies and gents, was my oriental meal. NOTE: cellophane noodles may come in a large package, but (despite your thinking) DO NOT cook all of them for a meal. For one thing, the feel and volume and size of them remind me of tape worms.

I would like to say, though, that the meal was really good, and the stir-fry flavoring was just enough, even though the cellophane noodles soak up all the sauce. I really wish I would have had more chicken, though.

Went in to work on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday I had to fix the graphics that I made on Saturday. And, all the while, I was rocking The Office hard.

After mass, David and Mark went to 2nd Street Diner. We got our food, afterwhich Dave regretted getting an omelette. “You know, I’m not such a fan of eggs.” Then we quoted my play. Then at the end, I was going for a physical gag, drinking for a long time, and I ended up almost drowning.

Came home, went to work, came back home, at leftovers, and then I went off to Improv practice. It was a decent practice. I led the “Follow the Leader”, which was a bad idea. I did a lot of running, and now my lungs are complaining.

I was a bad blocker tonight. I got called on it like 10 times. We spent 30 minutes trying to get a title for an action movie and another 30 minutes trying to decide what our shirts should look like. Downtime is bad.

Then I came home. Ryan Glanzer’s on Facebook now, and added me as a friend, so I checked on that, and I discovered that Holli Gregg called me a nerd and an idiot. So, I harassed her online for a while until we decided to be iFriends.

Then I watched 20oz. Mouse on Cartoon Network, which may shape up to be my next favorite random cartoon show. The animation is terrible, but I like the voice acting. There’s a part where a pink rectangle is talking to the crudely drawn mouse, and the mouse says, “It’ll cost you.” And the rectangle goes, “How much in the world is it?” and I laughed my buckle off. He did this strange emphasis to “world” that gave me giggles.

I mean, man-laughs.

Also, I wrote a song today called “Halfway Between Visible and Invisible.” I really like it. It has a “breakdown”, which would probably sound better with drums and on an electric guitar. Needs about 3 more stanzas, at least.

Alright. I’m going to bed. Drama Club meeting tomorrow, or some such thing.

I Miss Duncan Nutter

David
David, originally uploaded by awayken.

This is my cousin, David. This was taken minutes before I introduced him to The Office.

Because I held rehearsal on Friday, David was unable to get a ride home. So, feeling bad for him, I’ve decided to look after him this weekend.

First thing: The Office.

We watched episodes from 9:00 on. He kept saying, “More, more! I need this show like air!” We watched the entire set of videos that I have, with adequate pauses for laughter, explanation, and rewinding. It was finally 12:40 by the time I took him home.

Why do you think the orcs ransacked and destroyed the mines of Moriah? Was it strategic? Or was it just a coicidence, so to speak?

Remember Duncan Nutter? His name was a classic self-referential moniker, the likes of which you would only find in comic books. That and he was so freakin’ nuts that you couldn’t help but be entertained and fascinated.

I should start taking my camera out with me when I leave the apartment. Currently, I am quite afraid of scratching the screen. I will either have to buy a camera case, use the (large) one that I have, or figure out some sort of makeshift solution.

I’m tired. Maybe I’ll fall asleep in my chair.

Oh Thou TV

Haji
Haji, originally uploaded by awayken.

This is my pet turtle, Haji. She’s a sweetheart.

If you don’t already know, I bought https://milesrausch.com the other day and I’m pointing it right here. I will eventually start dividing Awayken.com into two pieces, with this being one of them.

I’m kinda disappointed in TV this year. And, on the other hand, there are a lot of good shows out there. Here’s my rundown.

Disappointing

The Gilmore Girls. Since the end of last season, Lorelei and Rory have been out of sorts with each other. Rory quit Yale, and Lorelei blew up at her, understandably so. One of the greatest parts of the show was the banter between mother and daughter bestfriends. There may be hope, though. In the last episode, Lorelei’s parents finally came to believe her about things with Rory. Does this mean a reunion soon? Does this mean a reconciling?

The West Wing. Wow. We saw the beginnings of this at the end of last season, but now it’s offical: The West Wing is no longer funny. Never have I noticed such a distinct change of directing, writing, and storytelling in a TV show. Consider this to be The West Wing II. The show has this new “digital documentary”-type feel to it. The writing is largely un-funny. They try putting in an “oh, this is so ridiculous” side-plot to most episodes, but it loses the feel. I may just stop watching.

How I Met Your Mother. So, the previews made this look like a really funny show. A peek at the pilot tells me otherwise. It seems to be more canned, recycled jokes. This is REALLY disappointing as both Bob Saget, Alyson Hannigan, and Neil Patrick Harris as the charismatic, fast-thinking crazy best friend. Problems: Bob Saget is just a voice, Alyson Hannigan still looks 17, and Neil Patrick Harris’ character isn’t quite out there or funny enough to keep my interest. There was a really potentially funny part when he kisses another guy full on the lips to make a point about girls and signals, but I just didn’t laugh. I’m not even done with the episode, but I felt compelled to write this. Don’t watch this show if you want true comedy.

Not Disappointing

CSI. Just as red hot as always. This show gets better by the episode, and they love pushing the technical and storytelling envelope.

Arrested Development. This show has a new addition: Charlize Theron. She never ceases to impress me in her choices for roles. I am a little hurt that they have cut down the beginning intro, but the show is just as funny as ever.

The Office. This is Bryce’s new obsession, and I’ve caught the bug. Season 1 is on DVD somewhere, but I doubt Madison has it. The new season has just kicked off, though, so that’s exciting. The show has a sort of off-beat timing that makes me wanna write my own faux-documentary… again.

Supernatural. I was wary of this show. It comes on right after Gilmore Girls, and they built it up a lot. Then I watched the pilot, and I liked it. I’m not watching it religiously, but if I can, I’ll catch it. Basically, these brothers are trying to find their dad who investigates paranormal going-ons. And, by doing so, they have to investigate their own paranormal going-ons.

Shows that I still have to catch: Threshold (a midget!), Firefly (from what I’ve heard), and Lost (the hottest show on right now).

Ok. Back to the grindstone.

Happy Native Columbus Day!

Supper: 09 Oct 2005
Supper: 09 Oct 2005, originally uploaded by awayken.

Chicken alfredo with baked potatoe, spinach leaf salad, cheese garlic bread, and milk.

This, my children, was my meal last night. The only problem was that it takes so long for my oven to preheat that the rest of the food was cold by the time I got the cheese garlic bread done.

It was my first prepared meal since the tempura accident. If you don’t know, tempura is that breading that they cover sweet and sour chicken and sweet and sour shrimp with. It’s actually pretty easy to prepare. You cut up chicken, add water to the batter, batter the chicken, then toss it in the oil. Well, I don’t have a deep-fat frier; I have a skillet and oil. Not being one to research before attempting, I first put the oil in the oven to get it to the specified temp of 355. Then I put it on the stove-top instead.

The first batch, before it was hot oil, turned out ruined. The batter floated off the chicken, so I just scooped that stuff out. My second batch, though, was going awesome. So awesome that I thought I’d try chatting with Holly for a bit. BIG MISTAKE.

I suddenly notice all this billowing (yes, billowing) smoke coming out of my kitchen. The batter stuff in the oil was burning, and it was producing the most acrid, foul-smelling smoke ever. Needless to say, I was coughing and in tears for nearly an hour trying to get the smoke out of my apartment, keeping the smoke alarm quiet, and escaping to the bathroom to breathe.

The food, when all was said and done, was excellent. The stench didn’t leave my apartment for days, and it definately made me reconsider finding or buying a fire extinguisher. And, probably, more air freshener.

My alfredo was good, though. Delish, even. And Britt and I chat-casted on MSN for a while. She has a webcam, and a cat named Oscar. And internet problems. We watched The West Wing and griped about the demise of a once great show.

Laundry was a chore. Actually, getting quarters was the chore. Since it’s a bank holiday, I had to be creative. I took a trip to campus and fed my dollars to a pop machine and then immediately asked for change. But I only had 3 $1 bills and a $5 bill and a $20 bill. So, I only did two loads of laundry.

Then I had improv rehearsal, which I thought went really well. I laughed a lot. They have this game called “Story Time” or something where you have to tell a story by feeding off of the person before you. Holli Gregg, it would seem, is the championess of this game, but tonight I managed to beat her. I’m sure it was luck, but it was fun. She is a worthy opponent.

Well, the hour is late, and I must be getting to homework (or deciding to not do it – one or the other). Be sure that more pictures will be coming. Me and my camera took a jaunt today, and as soon as the photo gallery I’m using turns 1.0, I’ll show the pics to you guys.

As if.

The End

So, some news. The wake was Friday. I booked it from my Math Modeling test to Gregory. I missed an Irish tenor doing “Danny Boy”, but I made it for a story about bean dip being penance. It was a funny story, but I can’t remember enough of it to post it.

Everyone came by the Red House to eat and socialize. They stayed until about 11pm or something. Then Saturday was the funeral. That was tough. I didn’t cry at the wake, but I did cry at the funeral. I think the entire town turned out for the event. At the very end, they played “Into the West” from the Return of the King soundtrack. Travelled to the cemetery. It was all quite emotional.

Then back to Madison. Rented Harvey and To Kill A Mockingbird, but I haven’t watched them yet. I was feeling drained from all the driving and emotions and stress of the week, so I crashed at 9:30pm and I slept until 9:45am. And, wow, did I feel better.

This whole weekend got me thinking about my own grandparents. And mortality. And death. And the complexities and confusions of inter-personal connections between people, and the effects that societal constraints have on them. I did a lot of thinking.

My New Camera

My New Camera
My New Camera, originally uploaded by awayken.

I just got it today. The Canon PowerShot A510. My first digital camera ever.

Look what I got today. That’s right. I was just sitting in my apartment, minding my own business, when FedEx shows up, 20 minutes before I have to head to work.

So, I’m making up for it now. Kinda.

Strange Days

I never thought it would happen. Well, I knew it would happen, but I never thought it would happen quite so soon. If you’ve ever met Collin Janes a particular set of words comes to mind: loud, 1970, drunk, and butt pirate. So who would have thought that he’d be getting married??

On Saturday, in the forgotten town of M… something, Collin Janes tied the knot (figuratively) with Emily Zimmer (literally). It was a nice ceremony. Catholic, even, so I didn’t have to go to Mass on Sunday. Score, Collin and Emily. Carl and Jeff were both there. I got to use two jokes.

1) “So, how do you guys know Collin?”
and
2) “It’s so nice seeing a homosexual couple at a Catholic wedding.”

Neither of the jokes had quite the delivery to send them home. Plus, we were still in the church, so I was trying to keep my voice down a little. Outside they gave us bells and bubbles, except the winds were 75 mph, so bubbles were dumb. I, of course, grabbed some bubbles and quickly abandoned them to the ground, exclaiming, “Hey, kid. Pick up your bubbles.”

Carl, Jeff and I started making fun of this truck. It had flames painted on it, but they made the flames look camouflage, which didn’t really stick out on a black pickup. Then this guy turned around and gave us a look, and it turns out that it was his truck. It was, though, really ridiculous a paint job. I hope he changes it and at least does urban camouflage.

Neither of us had any idea where the reception was, and Collin’s yellow convertible just kept going in circles, so we followed a whole bunch of cars, all of us piling in Jeff’s new Passat. There was a wave of panic, as it appeared that everyone was going to Sioux Falls. Thankfully, they stopped in Humboldt. Then we turned around so we could get our respective cars. Carl asked me if I really did get them pacifiers, to which I answered “Yes”, since it was the truth.

At the reception, they served us food. We had fried catfish. No, there was meat, rice, lettuce, olives, tomatoes, and two types of taco shells. That called “taco pie”. We joked around and had a good time. I got so wasted. And I tried driving home and almost wrecked twice. No, actually, none of us had any alcohol. Actually I didn’t even get any punch. I think the kitchen was a bit under-prepared or under-staffed. Oh, well. We had delicious Sparkling Apple Cider.

In other news, I finally bought a digital camera. This totally rocks. I’ve wanted one for so long I can’t think of when. I have a great practical camera and now I’m going to have a really good digital. It’s theCanon PowerShot A510, and it would seem that I got a good deal on it, too. And it’ll go great with this new photo gallery I found called ZenPhoto. More on that later.

Improv Troupe auditions were last night. They felt good. Acting is a really good release for me. I act all humble, but I like being on stage. It’s a toss-up for which I like better, directing or acting. And, of course, I’ll always enjoy writing. Afterwards I went to Holly and Bob’s to eat ice cream and watch a movie. Then I got home and went straight to bed. The strangest things can happen after you go to bed…

Walking With God

This morning, at 2am, Megan’s grandma passed away. Though I didn’t know her for long, I knew Francie as a strong, sometimes stubborn, no-nonsense, woman of God. Bedridden for far too long, today she is walking with God in Heaven, finally at peace. Please continue to keep Megan and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Good News (And Bad News)

Good News: I got Mini Opportunity 02 back in Math Modeling today, and I gots 10 out of 10. Finally.

Good News: Megan is back in Madison, and she seems to be doing okayish, as far as I can tell. Haji made her a sign. That crazy turtle, getting into my art supplies, trying to cheer Megan up. That kid’s got moxie.

Bad News: Her grandma hasn’t made much of a change one way or the other. It’s now just waiting, and that can be even harder. I feel bad that there isn’t more I can do for Megan and her family. I guess all I can do is stand back, try to keep her spirits up, do something sweet from time to time, and just wait and pray.
