Bryce and Lindsey

Ok, Google Video was going through a tough time, and the Bryce and Lindsey video is actually up now, if you missed it.

This weekend was a goodbye weekend for Bryce and Lindsey. See, Bryce is my brother, and he has asked Lindsey to marry him, so, since she is going to Grad School in Philly, he is going with her, and they have an apartment, and they’ll be there for two years or so (or that’s what I heard), so, since they’re leaving a little over a week from now, there was a get-together at Justin Kaiser’s parents’ house to celebrate (or mourn or whatever).

Saturday, around 2:15ish, Bryce and Holli and I went to get Lindsey. From there we drove to the firehall to get ice. Bryce asked me if I remembered the combination, which I didn’t. Then at the end of our ice excursion, he asked me again, and I remembered. Much to my delight. We added our drinks to the cooler at Boy’s (Justin Kaiser’s) and waited for more guests to arrive. During this time, Holli and I gave them our present, drinking glasses with cool stems, and Boy gave them his presents, legal software. Once enough were assembled, Bryce began writing up a bocce ball tournament. Holli and I were on a team, and we were team “Gobias”, as in “Gobias some coffee”.

The plan at first was to divide into groups and go two games at one time, but we were thwarted by the game (only one white ball, known as a “brick”, was available). So, we played as one big group. Holli and I lost. It’s hard to tell who won. Then we went in, rested a bit, then Ryan showed up and Chris left. So we played another game, but Ryan kept throwing it really far, and I didn’t feel like exacerbating my football injury, so I usually just dropped my ball near my feet.

Then we went in, sat around for a bit, and ordered pizza. Holli and I volunteered to go get it, so when it was ready, we hopped into Bryce’s van and tried in vain to get out, but I have no idea how long that van is, and I could see Tyler getting kinda upset if I turned his bug into modern art, so I played it careful. Too careful. 120 minutes later, I was pulling out of the driveway, annoyed and confused, like after watching The Da Vinci Code. But we nabbed the pizza, drove back, Ryan left, and we ate it.

After / during the meal, I popped in a DVD. It was one I made for Bryce and Lindsey. It was basically a slideshow put to music (my skillz at iMovie are still quite limited) but I tried my best to make it touching and personal. Unfortunately, I don’t have that many pictures of Lindsey, so I had put out a request for pictures to the home email account, hoping that Bryce wouldn’t see the email (which he didn’t), but apparently Mom didn’t think it was worth her time to respond, so I never received any help whatsoever. Thanks. Linds, I’m sorry you aren’t more prevalent. I really tried. I did.

After the DVD, I gave Bryce and Lindsey a little packet each. The packet contained a CD that I made for them, called “Heay Brother and Sister-In-Law”, and a copy of the DVD. I hope they enjoy them. I felt like I should do something for them, and I like doing creative things, and it helped me learn my Mac. It was a win-win-win situation.

After that we began one of the longest poker games in history, and I ended up winning $30 by crushing everyone in my path. My final victim was Tony, and before that, Tyler. Holli was an early casualty. I knew I had the cards, so I bet high, but she saw me, then I bet high again, trying to scare her off, but she proclaimed being stubborn, and saw my bet. I halved her chips in one hand. Eek. Then the losers played Apples 2 Apples.

I hope it was a good time. I had fun, but it was way later than I wished to stay. Oh, well. Good luck Bryce and Lindsey! We’ll be out to visit as soon as we can!

I uploaded the movie to here, and this is another movie I made with iMovie ;). Yes, Chris, I made these on a Mac, and I’m typing this post on a Mac!

Photos are here.

What’s Up, Dawgs?

Rose

If you’re anything like me, then you feel like there hasn’t been a whole lot of personal communication lately. You’re saying, “Miles, all you do is type up a trip that happened 100 years ago. We want to know what’s going on with you.” Well, I’m glad you italicized “you”. It gives me the will to continue.

Well, summer has thus far been crazy, and it’s not stopping (no, it’s not; no, it’s not). This weekend Holli and I and her family embark to New York City, New York. The timing of this trip has actually caused some problems for me at work, as I have used up all my vacation time on France, and there is Hyperion training in Texas that two employees have to go to, but all things were ironed out, and I was allowed to go. So, Friday we drive to Sioux Falls to spend the night at Aunt Karin’s so we can fly out at some unGodly hour on Saturday morning. I’ll bring some of you back souvenirs. If you want to know more, Holli has a pretty nicely laid out post about our trip.

Molly‘s birthday is the 22nd, so I’ll wish her “Happy Birthday!” right now.

I discovered this photographic technique called panography. You saw it above with the Rose. Basically, you take a lot of pictures of something big and then you put them all together in Photoshop. It’s really simple, but you get some pretty neat results. I’m obsessed with it right now, hence my two other panographs. You should view them close up to see all the detail.

Work has been slow right now. CRESH is going through some changes and so there’s not much for us to do, yet. It seems like that will change very soon, and I’ll talk about it more then.

I’ve been doing a lot of writing lately. I wrote a short film that Holly, Holli, Bob and I are going to begin principle photography on Thursday. It’s for a contest on StudentFilms.com, which we submitted to last year with the short “Driven to Distraction”. This one is called “Lost and Found“, and I put the script online. I’ve been starting all sorts of one-acts, but I finally got one finished. It’s called “Our Angels and Demons“, and Holli was/is slated to direct it. We’re not sure. She was going to do it for the Freshmen Showcase in Fall, but it now appears that she might not get a choice regarding what she directs. We’ll have to see.

Holly and Bob invited Holli and I to a cookout sort of thing in their backyard on Tuesday. We had hamburgers, chips, grapes, corn-on-the-cob, and more chips. Then we played “golf” in their backyard. Then we made a bonfire, and I shouted the phrase “Grandpa! Your dick!” everytime Bob snapped a branch on his knee. Then we had brownies, and we exchanged souvenirs. Good times.

Nice Guy Post

Bryce, Happy

You may have noticed that my little bro posted a sentimental, sappy sort of sayōnara post on his website today. He said some awfully nice things about me (and a lot of other people), and I didn’t even pay him off (or anything-else-him-off, either). So I decided to post back. But, I’m not going down the list of commenters or close friends and naming you and dedicating things to you. This is just a response. You guys all mean a lot to me, too, so I don’t want any pissy comments. I friggin’ mean it.

Bryce:

What can I say about the guy who was my first and closest friend. We’ve had good times. From inventing (with the help of cousins) our own Super Hero series (which I still would like to make a literary reality), to driving all of our babysitters nuts (including our Aunt Sue), to developing a successful TV series, group short story (with Dan), and countless impromptu indie films (actually, I think it’s like 3). We’ve had bad times, too. Nasty fights over chores, honest wishes that the other person would reside in Hell, throwing tile at each other for an audience (which Pete still brings up), and even a stabbing or two.

I can honestly say that I wouldn’t be the person I am today if not for you. You made me simultaneously more responsible and more deviant, as I usually had to clean your messes but you inspired make messes, too. You had the balls to try out horribly profane and disgusting jokes on others, and I learned from those mistakes and consciously tried to create a “classier” brand of humour for myself. But you also were my first audience. And we subconsciously developed the joint motto of “anything for a joke”, when usually the joke was for our enjoyment only.

I look back on our past, and I think that a little thing like you moving away isn’t going to change anything. There’s internet and phone calls and plane rides. No, no. This is just a beginning. This gives a whole new state to take over. And over there they might think your abortion jokes are tame.

You may be the stupid one who loves cheese and lighthouses, but I guess what I’m trying to say is that I love you, bro. And I mean that in a gay way.

Message for All Bloggers

Bryce and I bonded like prison roommates in France and one night while bonding up a Brokeback storm we decided that the summer sucks because nobody posts, including us. It isn’t like there’s nothing going on in our lives, no hilarious stories going on, or that we don’t want anyone knowing what’s going on; it’s that we generally don’t think about posting and don’t feel any real urge.

So, we came up with a plan:

I will post every Wednesday and Bryce will post every Tuesday, once a week, and you guys should try and do the same. It doesn’t even matter what you post, everyone is eager to check it out. Here are some post ideas:

  • Vacations
  • Artistic moments
  • Ideas for next semester
  • How you got engaged
  • Your addiction to WoW
  • How awesome everyone thinks Bryce is
  • Trips to Red Lobster
  • How you create a graphic for a new DSM school
  • How granite causes cancer
  • How you love your two male co-workers and you want to just take them home with you
  • C’o’k (chalk)

See all the things you could post about!

As I said, I have Wednesday, Bryce has Tuesday, you can post on the same day as us, hell, we could all post on the same day, except Bryce and I who I just mentioned are posting on different days.

Good Luck.

My Graduation

Me, Bryce
Me, Bryce, originally uploaded by m!les.

Well, I did it. No, you’re right. We did it. It was a group effort.

Finally, after five years of collegiate effort, strain, and work (all synonyms added for breadth) I’m finally a College Graduate. I have a Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science and a Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics for Information Systems.

I took all kinds of pictures, and there is even a video.

Of note, I sang with the choir on the big day, and US Senator Tim Johnson spoke at our graduation celebration. Then, on Sunday, there was a big to-do at the house. Of note was getting to watch (and nearly memorize) Bryce’s speech. My favorite part is his wink at the camera. It was like he was speeching right to me.

The get together was nice. Family came, friends came, tables were setup, pictures were taken, and good times were had. And the best part? No More Homework!

Then I went home and washed that gunk out of my hair.

In other artistic news, Beadle Hall published it’s latest edition of New Tricks, the literary magazine. Holli and I were both lucky enough to get works published. Holli had a photograph (which became the cover) and a graphic design (which you people have already seen) published. I had a poem called Hope and a short story called “Casio’s Dream” published. For the sake of curiousity, I discovered that the New Tricks site has an online version of their 2003 publication, in which I had a poem published.

I’m Gradjuwaiting!

My Graduation Invite

As if the title above, and Holli’s awesome graphic aren’t enough, then I should tell you that I am graduating on May 13th at 10:30am. I will get a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and Mathematics for Information Systems. I will also graduate Cum Laude and as a Center of Excellence graduate. There will also be a partay (of sorts). All who can read are invited.

I just wanted to open up an opportunity to get together to celebrate the graduations of Miles and Bryce from their respective colleges. Both boys graduate from DSU and SMSU on the same day, May 13 and within a half hour of each other. Val and I will be splitting up and each attending a graduation and then home to compare notes. Now for the opportunity. Since both boys are graduating at the same time there is no way to be fair to both so… we are having a celebration meal here at our house in Big Stone City to congratulate them and also have a little party. I was thinking anytime in the early afternoon. Eat around 12 or so depending on how schedules work out.

[ … ]

Let me know what you all think… Paula

I couldn’t have said it any better. But, wait. More details.

The Commencement march will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony will last about 90 minutes. There is no assigned seating for family and guests. [ … ] Arrangements have been made to make the graduation ceremony available live via the Internet. The link will be available on the DSU homepage, www.dsu.edu, on the day of the ceremony and for two weeks following the ceremony. It will then be moved to the alumni page. [ … ] We are pleased to announce that DSU has made arrangements through Jolesch Photography to provide photography services at the Spring 2006 Commencement ceremony. Jolesch will take two photos of each graduate – one on stage as the diploma is presented by President Knowlton and a second at the bottom of the stairs after crossing the stage.

I’ll eventually post about the Drama Club Banquet. Too much going on this week. Pictures will be are up, though. Video to follow soonly.

Got a New Phone

Ok. So, I pretty much just got a new phone over Easter. At first I was very anamored with it, but as time drew on, it found more and more things for me to dislike about it to myself therein. Then it stopped ringing when I got phone calls. Actually, I would put it into vibrate, and instead of vibrating, it would ring really really quietly.

That is not the point of a vibrate setting.

So I traded in this phone :

P.S. My number is the same.

Lake Okoboji United Methodist Camp and Retreat Center

Three Crosses
Three Crosses, originally uploaded by m!les.

So, first there was the Okoboji camp, with Holli. That was nice. I got to meet those people in Holli’s life. I met Bryan (website here), Deb, Mandy, and Keith (website here), and one night we played Outburst at Mandy and Keith’s place (and I really suck at it). Felt a little like a hero when I fixed a computer issue in five minutes what Keith had tried an entire day previously to fix. It was largely because I had had the same problem earlier that week.

We prepared food, cooked food, set out food, brought back food, ate food, washed dishes, dried dishes, put away dishes, washed counters, and bleached counters. In the meantime, I finished The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (and I think it’s my favorite so far). Did some homework, went to Catholic mass in Spirit Lake (the priest forgot the name of the mass intention – *eek!*), got a tour, and then came back to Madison. Also, while cutting onions, I chopped into my finger. Then, minutes later, Holli did the same thing. We hate onions.

Pictures are here.

Honors Banquet

Holli, Mom
Holli, Mom, originally uploaded by m!les.

There was a banquet. They handed out awards to the students. It was a good meal, catered by DSU of course, and we all had to get all nice and dressed up. Mom managed to make it down for this. I got a certificate for graduating Cum Laude, for being a College Student Leader, for being an Outstanding DSU Artist, and for the Drama Club’s achievement of getting the Certificate of Merit (which I got because I’m the president). I am most proud of Outstanding DSU Artist, because I really devote a lot of my time to the arts and because (ironically) I’m not an art major. Afterward I made mom buy me a huge Mountain Dew, and she bought Holli something, too. It was SNOWING when we left.

Pictures are here.

Drama Club Stuff

The Drama Club had two meeting last week. One, on Monday, I couldn’t attend, but one on Wednesday I could. The major topic was Drama Club Kids Camp, which (despite being on the agenda since November) kinda snuck up on us. The Camp was set for Saturday and was geared toward middle school kids. In the end, only one girl signed up, so we had to cancel it. This left me feeling really let down, because I had high hopes for the Camp. I hope next year’s president decides to run with it again. It’s a good idea. On Sunday, then, we went to Augie to The Pirates of Penzance. It was a good show, very packed (good thing we reserved tickets), but I had a hard time understanding what was being said. It might have been the mic usage or our seats, but we made the best of it. I did really enjoyed the “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General” song.

Pictures are going to be up soon.

And, as always, I have some video up, too.

So, Holli came over to do a quiz for Art History, and she goes into the bathroom. I then hear, “Oh! Hunny! I don’t know what I did!” Water was gushing everywhere. Holli had gone in to wash her hands, and it just happened to be the last movement needed to break the facet from the pipe. A couple phone calls, a visit from Justin Nowick, and 4 inches of standing water later, all my towels were wet and the plumbers were scheduled to come the next morning. Of course, there are pictures.

They Bytes was asked to perform (with a message) to a college prep course. We met Mike down there, and the six of us did three games, a sketch (a skit with a large emphasis on improv and only an outline of events) about the dangers of binge drinking (plus a conversation), and some words about college life. It was toodles. I got some pictures.

Easter

Easter Dinner
Easter Dinner, originally uploaded by m!les.

I went home for Easter, and Holli went home for Easter. This year’s Easter was pretty laid back. We plaid guitar at church, and we made Ben’s spicy beans (These beans are so spicy that I cried the first time I ate them. I cried like a girl ignored at prom). We did bowling, too, which was nice. We played the crazy kind of Balderdash (David’s version). Then we had supper at Sue’s place and I brought Ben’s beans (The first time I ate these beans I cried. I cried like a Star Wars fan after Episode I). Then I went back to Madison. There are pictures.

Holli’s Birthday

Holli in her Birthday Suit
Holli in her Birthday Suit, originally uploaded by m!les.

Holli had her 20th birthday on the 15th. Unfortunately, we couldn’t celebrate until that Monday. So I gave her her presents: Adidas Moves for Women, markers, I wrote her a myth, a messenger bag (this present came days later, and I had to do a lot of sneaking to get her to go to her car for no reason and find it). You can read her post on the day. She was on duty for part of the time, but we headed down to Sioux Falls and ate at Ruby Tuesday (my first time ever – very very excellent), watched “Thank You For Smoking” (very funny and satirical), and got some Coldstone Ice Cream. I think she had a good day. Happy Birthday, Sweetie! Pictures are here.
